How to Land Your Dream Job in 2019 in 3 Easy Steps
The job market is changing. The way you land a job or a promotion seems to be evolving. What I hear from many of my friends who acquaintances who are searching for jobs is that they apply for a ton of positions and seldom here back or are told they simply are not qualified.
So the question is …
How do you land that dream job (or any job for that matter) in 2019?
The key is you have to be different. It used to be that by simply having a degree you were different. That is no longer the case. According to Lumina, 39.4% of Americans from the age of 25 to 64 have a college degree, and that number continues to grow. While a degree certainly can be a good place to start, it should not be the only thing you do to differentiate yourself from the job market.
Here are 3 steps you can take to land your dream job.
1. Self Educate
There is knowledge out there to be had, you just have to go get it. The knowledge you acquire doesn’t even necessarily have to be specific to the industry you are trying to get a job in, but simply by continuously learning you will put yourself ahead of the field. I have found it particularly advantageous to read books on business and entrepreneurship. If you want to be an investment banker listen to a podcast about banking. If you want to be a real estate agent, watch videos on how to be successful in real estate. Books, podcasts, and videos will be your best friend, and the best thing is they are mostly free or require a small investment.
It’s not what you know it’s who you know. You’ve heard it before, and a lot of times it is true. Networking is a weird buzzword, but the practice of it doesn’t have to be awkward. I listened to a podcast on networking recently where the person being interviewed opened up LinkedIn and his phone for five minutes every morning and reached out to 3–5 people he hadn’t talked to in awhile. He just shot a message to them saying hello and wishing them well. By doing this you keep in touch with possibly hundreds of a people a year you otherwise wouldn’t have, and when you are looking to land that dream job those relationships may prove valuable.
3. Create your own content
This can seem daunting at times, but it certainly doesn’t have to be. If you don’t have one already, create yourself an account on Medium or start a blog. If you really want to take full advantage of what content creation can do for your career write a book and publish it online. If you don’t know how to do that give this article a read. Publishing a book on a topic will not only help you learn that subject matter better, but it will give you a huge leg up on the competition. Imagine putting “Published Author” on your resume and bringing in a copy of your book to an interview. If you want to stand out from the crowd write a book.
I hope these tips prove helpful in achieving your career goals. Stay focused and keep fighting the good fight.
