Treat Your Sales Job As A Career
In my experience, I’ve noticed a lot of Sales Professionals treat their jobs as a sort of pit stop or bridge — just something to get us to the next thing.
If I’m honest, I’ve had this mindset myself.
Since I was a teen I wanted to own my own company. I wasn't sure what type of business I would start, but I knew I wanted to be my own boss. My feelings have changed a bit about that in some ways, but that is a conversation for another day.
I would spend hours learning how to market. I would spend hours teaching myself about real estate. I would read books and listen to podcasts about anything and everything except how to do my job better.
Isn’t that funny? I would devote so much time and energy learning how to make money doing something that wasn’t paying me while I neglected getting better at the thing keeping my lights on.

Has anyone else been there?
For the sake of clarity, I don’t think learning about things to better yourself is bad. In fact, I really encourage it. I read books constantly. I listen to podcasts daily. I try to learn from the best so I can become better, but I think Sales Professionals have a tendency to do this with topics other than what would make them better at their jobs.
Why is this?
To be successful in sales you have to have a certain amount of “hustle” inside you. You have to have grit and be resourceful. You also have to be money motivated. These attributes are the same ones you typically find in entrepreneurs. We want to build something.
At the end of the day, I would encourage you to keep learning and propelling yourself to where you want to be — where you will be happy. I would caution you however not to neglect getting better where you currently find yourself. If you are money motivated it will certainly pay off.
